The United States War of Independence, American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), American War of Independence, [2] or simply Revolutionary War in the United States, was an armed conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Thirteen Colonies in America of the North, that had declared its independence like the United States of America.
Shortly after the Seven Years' War, a sense of discontent with the metropolis began to grow in the British colonies in America, based on philosophical and political differences exacerbated by the souring of the bonds between the Crown and the people of the colony. After the introduction of the Seal Act of 1765, the Patriots protested against the idea of "unrepresentative taxation" and began boycotts against the British; a group known as "Sons of Liberty" ended up destroying a cargo of tea at Boston's wharf. The British government responded by closing the city's ports and passed punitive measures against Massachusetts. The settlers, in turn, instituted the "Suffolk Resolutions," establishing a parallel government to try to get the British out of control of areas outside of Boston. Representatives of the American colonies then established the Continental Congress to coordinate resistance efforts and establish committees and conventions to effectively seize power.
