The salinas river was the only one we had and so we boasted about it . In wetter winter it was dangerous , and how dry it was in a dry summer! you can boast about anything if it´s all you have. Maybe the less you have, the more you want to boast. In June the hills turned brown , an impressive kind of brown-an indescrilable color. The wind blem down the valley land was deep and rich,but the foothills wore only a skin of topsoil no deeper than the grass roots,an the farther up the hills you went, the thimmer grew the soil.

O rio Salinas era o único que tínhamos e nós nos gabávamos sobre isto.No inverno húmido era perigoso, e quão seco era no verão seco! Tu podes te gabar sobre qualquer coisa se for tudo o que tens. Talvez o pouco que voce tem, mais tu queres mostrar. Em junho as montanhas tornaram-se castanhas, um tom notável de castanho- uma cor indescritível. O declive do vento ao longo do vale era profundo e rico, mas o sopé usava apenas uma camada de solo superficial, não mais profundo que as raízes da mata e quanto mais longe se elevava a colina, mais o solo crescia.
