“Simple Past”, ou passado simples, é uma ação em um determinado momento no passado. Ex. “I visited my friend on Friday” (Eu visitei minha amiga na sexta).
“Present Perfect”, ou presente perfeito, é quando há uma ação no passado que já acabou mas não se diz quando ou não se sabe quando aconteceu – Ex. “I’ve already met her” (Eu já conheci ela) – ou algo que começou em determinado ponto no passado mas ainda não acabou, ou seja, uma ação que se estende desde o passado até agora. Ex. “I haven’t had a moment to write to you until now” (Não tive tempo de escrever para você até agora)
Este último exemplo é a primeira frase da foto abaixo. Na frase seguinte já houve uma mudança de tempo verbal para o “simple past” porque ela diz quando aconteceu: “I was with friends all day on Thursday” (eu estive com meus amigos o dia todo na quinta).  Depois: Harry and I have got to know each other well in a week, and he has told me a lot about his life” (Harry e eu nos conhecemos muito bem em uma semana e ele tem me dito muito coisa sobre sua vida) – mesma situação: a semana ainda não acabou “in a week” seria nesta semana.
