Samhain was a Celtic festival that celebrated the end of summer and the beginning of another year. In that festival, the people lit a bonfire to keep the bad spirits away and they wore animal skin and head as disguises to fool the spirits. They had this tradition of putting embers from the bonfire into hollowed out turnips to carry them back home so that the people could light a new fire at their own houses to bring good luck. The following day, the ashes from the bonfired were scattered on the land to bring good luck to the crops.
