Passive Voice

Study these sentences:

Coca-Cola sponsored the World Cup.

The World Cup was sponsored by Coca-Cola.



We have studied all the tenses so far. But, they were in active voice: the subject of the sentence made the actions. Now we are going to study the Passive Voice. We use the Passive voice when we want to focus the action. It doesn’t matter who or what is performing the action.


About Passive Voice:

→It is always formed with two or more verbs.

Example: The brand is (1) being (2) promoted (3) by this advertising.


→It is formed with the verb of the tense + past participle.

Example: The books were shown in TV commercials.

Simple Past + Past Participle


Passive Voice examples:

Tense

Simple Present Example

am/is/are + Past Participle The products are seen in TV programmes.

Present Continuous

am/is/are being + Past Participle The film is being sponsored by BM.

Simple Past

was/were + Past Participle The company was sold due to the good marketing.

Past Continuous

was/were being + Past Participle The manager was being served by the time we got there.
