All at once the merchant lost his whole fortune, excepting a small country-house at a
great distance from town, and told his children, with tears in his eyes, they must go there and
work for their living. The two eldest answered that they would not leave the town, for they hacd
several lovers who they were sure would be glad to have them, though they had no fortune; buc
in this they were mistaken, for their lovers slighted and forsook them in their poverty. As they
were not beloved on account of their pride, everybody said, "They do not deserve to be pitied
we are glad to see their pride humbled, let them go and give themselves qualicy airs in milking
the cows and minding their dairy. But (added they) we are extremely concerned for Beauty, she
was such a charming, sweet-tempered creature, spoke so kindly to poor people, and was of such
an affable, obliging disposition." Nay, several gentlemen would have married her, though they
knew she had not a penny; but she told them she could not think of leaving her poor father in
his misfortunes, but was determined to go along with him into the country to comfort him and
attend to him. Poor Beauty at first was sadly grieved at the loss of her fortune; "but (she said
to herself) were I to cry ever so much, that would not make things better, I must try to make
myself happy without a fortune." [...]

A Bela e a Fera
Um mercador perdeu toda sua fortuna de uma só vez, exceto sua pequena casa de campo que ficava a uma grande distância da cidade, e disse a suas filhas - com lágrimas nos olhos - que eles deveriam se mudar para lá e trabalhar para viver. As duas filhas mais velhas responderam que não iriam deixar a cidade, pois tinham vários pretendentes, os quais elas tinham certeza que ficariam felizes em tê-las embora não tivessem fortuna; porém nisto elas estavam enganadas, por seus amantes as desprezarem e abandonarem em sua pobreza. Enquanto estas não foram amadas por causa de seu orgulho, todos disseram: "Elas não merecem ser compadecidas. Nós estamos contentes em ver seu orgulho humilhado, deixe-as ir e darem-se bons ares ao ordenhar as vacas e pensarem em seu dia a dia. Mas, (acrescentaram eles) nós estamos extremamente preocupados com Bela, ela era uma criatura tão encantadora, de temperamento doce, falava tão gentilmente com os pobres, e era de uma disposição afável e prestativa". "Não, vários cavalheiros teriam se casado com ela, embora soubessem que esta não tinha um centavo"; no entanto Bela lhes disse que não conseguia pensar em deixar seu pobre pai às desgraças, estava determinada a ir junto com ele ao interior para consolá-lo e ajudá-lo. A pobre Bela a princípio ficou extremamente triste com a perda de sua fortuna, "Mas, (disse a si mesma) chorar tanto não fará as coisas ficarem melhores, deverei tentar fazer-me feliz sem uma fortuna".
