Se o Inglês é uma língua germânica (assim como o Alemão, Dinamarquês, Sueco, Norueguês e Neerlandês) por que existem tantas palavras inglesas iguais a palavras latinas. Por exemplo:

It was chiefly due to two events. The first was the Roman invasion and conquest of Britain, and Latin was the language of Romans. The second was the influence of the Church upon the European culture, and Latin was too the lingua franca of Church, hence the influence of Latin upon English was enormous. It's estimated that up to 60% of all English words are derived from Latin
