The Lantern Festival closes the Chinese New Year festivities after 15 days of celebrations. Therefore, such an event happens every year on the fifteenth day of the lunar calendar. Also one of the most important Chinese cultural festivals for over 2,000 years, on this day the streets are decorated, lanterns are hung, there are fireworks and performances all over the country.
According to Chinese history, the festival had its origin during the Han Dynasty. Noticing that some Buddhist monks lit lanterns in the temples on the fifteenth day of the lunar year in respect to the Buddha, Emperor Ming, a champion of Buddhism in China, ordered all temples and houses to light lanterns on the same day. The custom was spreading and gaining more and more strength and, to this day, is a tradition very common in every country.

However, like many things in China, this festival also has legendary origins. One of the legends says that the origin of the festival is related to the Emperor of Jade, one of the representations of the first god of Chinese culture. The Jade Emperor's heron was hunted and killed during a flight to Earth. In fury for his bird, the Emperor planned a storm for revenge, but his daughter warned them all. So a wise man from a village suggested that everyone hang and light red lanterns in their houses to deceive the Emperor so that they thought the village was on fire.
As it should not be, the Lantern Festival also has its gastronomic attractions. The sweet rice dumpling - Tangyuan - is the symbol of this festival, as it represents the union of the family. At dusk, numerous lanterns are lit by citizens, with different sizes, colors and shapes. For the Chinese, such an act symbolizes the illumination of the future. In addition to lighting lanterns, family gatherings, enigmatic games and traditional dances are essential elements of that date.
