India is the seventh largest country on the globe. This vastness is not restricted to the territory, but is also reflected in the size of the population and culture. Its ancient existence and the diversity of ethnicities, beliefs and languages make Indian customs even richer, exerting fascination and curiosity for many peoples.
1. Offering chai to visitors
Intake of tea is common for Indians. The practice emerged in China in the middle of the year 250 B.C., but it was only introduced in Hindu culture around AD 1280, on one of several expeditions undertaken by adventurer Marco Polo.
2. Eat with your right hand only
Eating with your hands is common practice across India. Even in big cities, with malls and hotels for foreigners, the use of cutlery is optional. However, the practice is viewed with good eyes when feeding using the right hand.
3. Activate the horn for another purpose
Tourists consider the local traffic to be a spectacle worth watching. In it, we find cars, rickshaws, animals and pedestrians traveling simultaneously, without headlights or signs, but with an admirable harmony and without major accidents.
4. Greet with Namaste
Although there are dozens of entries for greetings in the Hindi language, greetings such as good morning, good afternoon, please or see you soon are rarely used in everyday life. The common ways to say all of these expressions are Namaskar or Namaste, the latter, well known among yoga practitioners.
5. Incorporating cinema into Indian customs
The scents, colors and clothing are vibrant in India and represent their presence throughout history. Over the years and access to Western culture, the seventh art was added to Indian civilization and became a national passion.
6. Use saree as a sign of marriage
The saree is the traditional clothing of women. It is not known for sure when it appeared, but there are records of its presence in Indian culture for at least five thousand years. It is a long strip of cloth that can be tied in different shapes and designs.
7. Celebrate the wedding for weeks
The wedding consists of several stages, with longer celebrations (in weeks) than the Judeo-Christian ceremonies. There are several rituals until the time of the groom's arrival at the altar, some during and others after the feast, as thanks to the spouses to the gods, for the new union.
8. Use spices differently
Historically recognized, this was the nation that brought color, flavor and aroma to the rest of the world. Spices - the currency of trade and the cause of wars for many centuries - are an essential part of Indian cuisine.
