CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19): WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Think about these questions below:
-- Why do you think people are beginning to panic? What do you
think about the bulk buying of products such as masks and toilet
paper.?
-- Have you started doing anything differently since the outbreak?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging
from the commom cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East
Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). A novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain
that had not previously been identified in humans. Coronaviruses are zoonotic,
meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Common signs of
infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath, and
breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia,
severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.
The COVID-19 virus infects people of all ages. However, evidence to
date suggests that two groups of people are at a higher risk of getting severe
COVID-19 disease: older people and those with underlying medical
conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasized that all must
protect themselves in order to protect others. On March 10th the WHO issued a
new guidance to help protect children and schools from transmission of the
COVID-19 virus. The guidance provides critical considerations and practical
checklists to keep schools safe.
Recommendations to prevent infection spread include the following:
Regularly and thoroughly wash your hands! Health authorities in the UK and
USA have told people to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds or the time it
takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. Maintain social distance between yourself
and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. When someone coughs or sneezes,
they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain the
vírus.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Once contaminated,
hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose, or mouth. From there, the virus
can enter your body and make you sick. Make sure you, and the people around
you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and
nose with the inside of your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then
dispose of the used tissue immediately.
