Alice Ball was an American chemist who developed the only effective treatment against antimicrobial treatment in 1940. This scientist began his training at the University of Washington and then transferred to Hawaii to pursue graduate studies. There he established two milestones: he became the first African American person and the first woman to graduate from university.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a disease known as leprosy - spreads uncontrollably, causing a public health problem to qualify the only solution currently available. The police arrested the patients and closed the leprosarium in Kalaupapa, on the Hawaiian island of Molokai; there the pains take chaulmo oil, which causes severe abdominal pain. At the age of 23, Ball, horrified by this scenario, involved in an extract of injectable oil that was effective against the disease, known as the ball method: the sick are no longer needed and are seen by their families.

Bola died very young, at the age of 24. The cause of death remains unknown, and only 90 years after the university where his findings were recorded in his work. Today, there is a day dedicated to honoring her, on February 29, and she christens the institution's Medal of Distinction.
