A lockdown, or in Portuguese total blocking or confinement, is an isolation protocol that generally prevents people, information or cargo from leaving an area. The protocol can usually only be initiated by someone in a position of authority. Lockdowns can also be used to protect people inside a building or, for example, a computer system from a threat or other external event. In buildings, a training lockdown usually means that the doors leading outwards are locked, so that no one can enter or leave. A total lockdown generally means that people must stay where they are and cannot enter or leave a building or rooms within that building. If people are in a corridor, they should go to the nearest secure and closed room. Lockdown is the most rigid version of social detachment and when the recommendation becomes mandatory. It is an imposition of the State that means total blockade. In the pandemic scenario, this measure is the most rigorous to be taken and serves to slow down the spread of the new Coronavirus, when social isolation and quarantine measures are not enough and cases increase daily.
