The term fake news has made headlines in newspapers and the internet in recent years. However, not everyone is sure what fake news means. The term comes from fake English and news. Thus, in Portuguese, the word means false news. Despite having recently stood out, the expression is much older and dates from the end of the 19th century. Fake News is the false information that goes viral among the population as if it were true. Currently, they are mainly related to social networks.
The internet makes it possible for news to spread at an ever faster rate. And social networks have further accelerated this process. However, the space is also conducive so that fake news is also easily disseminated. In addition, another important factor is that people have lost the habit of verifying the sources of data. When something is published, there are automatically hundreds of shares without even getting to where that news came from.
The election period has raised the debate about the danger of fake news. Lately, a kind of war has been created between those involved in the electoral process to overthrow opposing candidates with the dissemination of spoken news on the internet. Scandals of creating departments specializing in the creation and spread of untrue information have made headlines around the world.
A expressão fake news ganhou as páginas dos jornais e a internet nos últimos anos. No entanto, nem todos sabem ao certo o que significa fake news. O termo vem do inglês fake (falsa/falso) e news (notícias). Dessa forma, em português, a palavra significa notícias falsas. Apesar de ter se destacado recentemente, a expressão é bem mais antiga e data do final do século XIX. Fake News são as informações falsas que viralizam entre a população como se fosse verdade. Atualmente, elas estão, principalmente, relacionadas às redes sociais.
A internet possibilita que as notícias se espalhem em uma velocidade cada vez mais rápida. E as redes sociais aceleraram ainda mais esse processo. Entretanto, o espaço também é propício para que as notícias falsas também sejam facilmente divulgadas. Além disso, outro fator importante é que as pessoas perderam o costume de verificar as fontes de um dado. Quando algo é publicado, automaticamente há centenas de compartilhamentos sem nem ao menos chegar de onde partiu aquela notícia.
O período das eleições tem levantado o debate sobre o perigo das fake news. Ultimamente criou-se uma espécie de guerra entre os envolvidos no processo eleitoral para derrubar os candidatos adversários com a divulgação de notícias falas na internet. Escândalos de criação de departamentos especializados na criação e propagação de informações inverídicas ganhou as manchetes em todo o mundo.
