Pigmaleão, in Greek mythology, was a king of the island of Cyprus, [1] [2] who, according to Ovid, a contemporary Roman poet of Augustus, was also a sculptor and fell in love with a statue he sculpted when trying to reproduce the ideal woman. [ 1] He had decided to live in celibacy on the island because he did not agree with the libertine attitude of the women there, known as courtesans [1]
