The adventure of space travel had begun, at least in people’s dreams, centuries before, when man had started to wonder what exists beyond the confines of the Earth. From that time on, space was the province of both scientists and dreamers. While some were working out the first theories of the Universe, others were imagining extraordinary flights from the Earth. For example, the Greek writer Lucian of Samosata in about 160 BC told in his True History the tale of a group of men flung from the sea to the Moon by a violent gale and of their encounters on this world with warriors riding three-headed birds.
This was one of the first, if not the very first, of a long series of tales which today we call science fiction.
