past of to be eh simplesmente o passado do verbo to be! I am they are e etc.
I was studying
He was dancing
They were crying..
pra usar no interrogativo faz igual o verbo to be na forma normal
cplocando na frente
Were they at the school yesterday?
A gnt usa o was pra I/He/She/It
e o were pra They/We/They
ai na first condicional eh o uso do IF + o will
If you study, you will pass...

O proprio be já é um verbo irregular, pq vira was ou were
enfim,
