Human identity, the idea that defines each and every one of us, could be facing an unprecedented crisis. It is a crisis that would threaten long-held notions of who we are, what we do and how we behave. And it is caused by one simple fact: the human brain, that most sensitive of organs, is under threat. Unless we wake up to the damage that the increasing technology of the 21st century is doing to our brains, we could be walking towards a future in which neuro-chip technology blurs the long-held line between living and non-living machines, and between our bodies and the outside world.
