Headlines and lead

Manchetes e lide

The first page of a newspaper has the most important news of the day. On this page,

you can find short sentences using verbs in the present tense, the headlines, which are

highlighted in order to call the attention of the reader to the news. Headlines use keywords

that can be easily understood by the reader.

The first words or sentences of an article in a newspaper are called lead. In a few

words, the lead of a newspaper is a short paragraph that introduces the reader to the story

and contains a summary of the facts, indicating the subject, place, and date of the event. So

the lead tells the readers what happened, who was involved, when, where, and how the

event happened.

One of the main functions of the lead is to provide the reader with the most important

information in the text in case he / she doesn't have time to read the complete news. Another

reason for the lead is that if the news is too long, the newspaper editor can cut parts of it,

usually the final ones.
