In 1620, a group of people sailed from England to

America. There landed one hundred people on the ship.

They wanted to start a new life in America and practice

their religion in freedom. They lived at a place on the

north-east coast of America. They were it Plymouth.

They were far from their home, and life was hard. They had  little food and they knew little about their new home. Their first winter in America was very cold.

Many of them became ill and died.

However, the Native Americans who grew there

decided zo help them. They taught the newcomers

how to grow corn and other plants to eat, and they gave  them medicine to treat their illnesses. They also

showed their new friends how to hunt for food and how to

built better houses. The newcomers worked hard and

their crops called. By November 1621 all of them

had food and a home. To thank the Native Americans,

the newcomers invited them to a special dinner to

celebrate their friendship. This special dinner was the first

Thanksgiving. The first Thanksgiving dinner lasted

for three days.
