Johnson: Simpler and more foreign
A few guesses as to what English will look like in the coming

SEVERAL weeks ago, Johnson discussed
his debate with Nicholas Ostler about the
lingua franca of the future. Johnson thinks
that English has a very long run ahead of
it. Mr. Ostler sees English's time as coming
to an end, to be replaced by machine-
translation tools that will remove the need
for people to learn to speak, read and write a lingua franca. But we agreed
that whatever the long run might look like the next few decades are set
No language has anything like a chance of displacing English.
Interestingly, about two-thirds of English-speakers are not first-language
speakers of English. To put it another way: English no longer belongs to
England, to superpower America, or even to the English-speaking countries
generally. Rather, English is the world's language. What happens to a
language when it becomes everybody's? Shaped by the mouths of billions
of non-native speakers, what will the English of the future look like?
A look into the past can give us an idea. English is of course not the
first language learned by lots of non-natives. When languages spread, they
also change. (...)
English may simplify because it is spreading. But it is spreading because
it is expressive and useful. Most of the world's languages would love to
have the problems that English has.

DIVERSAS semanas atrás, Johnson discutiu
seu debate com Nicholas Ostler sobre o
língua franca do futuro. Johnson pensa
que o inglês tem um longo percurso pela frente
isto. O Sr. Ostler vê a hora do Inglês chegando
até o fim, para ser substituído por máquina
ferramentas de tradução que irão eliminar a necessidade
para as pessoas aprenderem a falar, ler e escrever uma língua franca. Mas nós concordamos
que seja qual for o longo prazo que possa parecer, as próximas décadas estão definidas
Nenhum idioma tem chance de substituir o inglês.
Curiosamente, cerca de dois terços dos falantes de inglês não são língua materna
falantes de inglês. Colocando de outra forma: o inglês não pertence mais a
Inglaterra, para superpotência América, ou mesmo para os países de língua inglesa
geralmente. Em vez disso, o inglês é a língua do mundo. O que acontece com um
linguagem quando se torna de todos? Moldado por bocas de bilhões
de falantes não nativos, como será o inglês do futuro?
Uma olhada no passado pode nos dar uma ideia. Inglês é claro que não é o
primeira língua aprendida por muitos não nativos. Quando as línguas se espalham, eles
também mudar. (...)
O inglês pode simplificar porque está se espalhando. Mas está se espalhando porque
é expressivo e útil. A maioria das línguas do mundo adoraria
tem os problemas que o inglês tem.
