“We show that we are
only worthy of belonging to the free country
that we want to see founded.
There are many years that was placed
the first stone of the great building,
but we are still in time
to cast our obscure names
on the foundations of a new homeland ”
(Brazilian Society Against Slavery Manifesto, 1880)
The month of November, especially the 20th, is marked by the celebrations of Black Awareness Day and the denunciation of the persistence of racism in Brazilian society.
The origin of this date is associated with the struggle of the black movement that suggested, on the initiative of the Palmares Group of Rio Grande do Sul, in the 70s, this day in memory of Zumbi dos Palmares and the black struggle in the country, in contrast to the 13 May, the day the Golden Law is signed.
Later, the date was recognized by the Brazilian State through Law No. 10,639 / 2003, which instituted the mandatory teaching of "Afro-Brazilian History and Culture" and the 20th of November as National Day of Black Awareness, in addition to the Law No. 12,519 / 2011, which consolidated it as the National Day for Zombies and Black Consciousness.
