There is e There are são flexões do verbo em sua forma afirmativa do Simple Present.

vamos ver como esse verbo fica na negativa:

There is + not é usado no singular, => There isn´t (forma contraída)

e

There are + not é usado no plural. => There aren´t (forma contraída)

Exemplos:

There isn´t a dog behind you. (NÃO Existe (tem, há) um gato atrás de você.)

There aren´t many houses for sale. (NÃO Existem (há) muitas casas à venda.)
