Racism in Brazil is a legacy of Portuguese colonization. The Brazilian Indians did not see themselves as one people and the tribes nurtured animosities among themselves, generating constant wars. However, prejudice based on physical appearance, culture or religion was brought along with Portuguese colonizers.
