Science 100 Cups of Coffee before the Bomb Scientists at Bombay’s Bhabha Atomic Research Centre have discovered that rats injected with caffeine can stand gamma radiation better than rats without caffeine. The rats were injected with 100mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight an hour before radiation, and they survived for more than a month afterwards, while rats with lower doses of caffeine or none at all died within a month in the findings reported in the Journal of Radiological Protection. While it doesn´t seem likely that these tests will be performed on humans, the theory holds that if an average man weighing 70 kg drinks at least 100 cups of coffee before the bomb hits, he will be able to survive the otherwise lethal dose of radiation. But don´t drink coffee after the blast, as caffeine administered after irradiation seems to induce chromosomal aberrations rather than preventing them,” according to Dr. Mike Clark of Britain’s National Radiological Protection Board.
