Thomas Edison (the man that invented the electric light bulb)
He was bom in the Ohio United States in 1847. He went to school for only three months because
his teacher thought that he caused trouble in the classroom. In fact, he spoke in a loud voice
because he could not hear very well. When he left school, he was only 7 years old. My mother
became his teacher at home.
My parents had seven children and he was the youngest. We did not have much money, so when
he was 12 years old, all his brothers and sisters worked. In 1859 he got a job at railways and he
sold food and drinks on trains.
From 1863 to 1867, he worked as a telegraph operator. He liked machines and sometimes he did
experiments
He moved to New Jersey and in 1870, he opened several telegraph companies.
He mamed Mary Stilwell in 1871 and had three children.
In 1876, He built a research laboratory and invented the phonograph- a machine to play music-
and many other things.
They had electricity but they had no electric light. After a lot of experiments and hours of hard
work he invented the electric light bulb. New York got a new name. The City That Never Sleeps.
Than a sad day arrived in his life. In 1884, his wife became ill and died.
One day, he was poor. The next day he was rich. Dunng his life, he started a lot of companies
and he bought light to cities and invented lots of new things.
How did he do it? His answer was, "one per cent inspiration and 99 per cent perspiration. Hard
work was the key.
