A canopy is a decorated cover, often made of cloth, which is placed above something such as a bed or a seat.

subcanopy (plural subcanopies) The section of a forest immediately beneath the canopy quotations.

The understory is the underlying layer of vegetation in a forest or wooded area, especially the trees and shrubs growing between the forest canopy and the forest floor.

The forest floor, also called detritus, duff and the O horizon, is one of the most distinctive features of a forest ecosystem.

Fringing reefs grow near the coastline around islands and continents. They are separated from the shore by narrow, shallow lagoons.

Barrier reefs are similar to fringing reefs in that they also border a shoreline; however, instead of growing directly out from the shore, they are separated from land by an expanse of water.
