Lenda da Iara

Explicação:

The legend of Iara or legend of the mother of water, as it is also known, is part of one of the most popular narratives of Brazilian folklore. She tells the story of a mermaid who comes out of the sea every night in search of distracted men, and takes them to the depths with the intention of killing them.

It is a typical story in the northern region of the country, especially in the Amazon, as it was developed by indigenous peoples. For them, iara means “that one lives in the waters”, a mermaid of enchanting beauty, with long, black hair and brown eyes.

The legend of Iara was created by the Tupi-Guarani people. They tell the story of a powerful Indian who, before becoming a mermaid, lived in a tribe together with her family, oozing beauty wherever she went. Iara was so beautiful that she caused envy in many people, including her siblings, who, unhappy with this, wanted to kill the índia and disappear with their bodies.

On any given night, they called their sister to carry out the plan, but when they got nowhere they were surprised by the strength of the Indian warrior, who managed to escape the trap and reversed the situation by practicing the crime against them.

Afraid that her father, the shaman (religious chief of the tribe) of the tribe, would discover and apply punishment, she ran away, but was discovered. Thus, her father launched in Rio Negro and Solimões as a form of punishment for having killed his brothers.

The legend of Iara says that India was saved by fish and as it was a night with a full moon, she was transformed into a mermaid. Currently, the legend of Iara is represented by a beautiful mermaid who attracts men with her irresistible song to the bottom of rivers, a place from which they never return.

Legend has it that men who manage to get to the surface are in a complete state of madness, not that only a shaman is capable of undoing the spell.

Before attracting men to an “ambush”, the mermaid Iara spends most of her time sitting on the rocks, admiring her own beauty reflected in the waters, in addition to combing her hair and playing with the fish.
