This article presents the historical development and the role of political parties in the United States. For most of its history, American politics has been dominated by the bipartisan system. However, the United States Constitution never said anything about the issue of political parties; at the time it was sanctioned in 1787, there were no parties in the country. The need to garner popular support in a republic led to the invention of political parties in the 1790s. [1] Americans innovated by creating new campaign techniques that linked public opinion to public policy through the party. [2]
Political scientists and historians divide the development of the American bipartisan system into five eras. [3] The current system consists of the Republican and Democratic parties. In general, since the 1930s the Democratic Party has positioned itself on the Left of American politics, while the Republican Party has positioned itself on the Right. Several small parties also operate in the United States and, from time to time, elect some representatives at the municipal level.
