The Federative Republic of Brazil (República Federativa do Brasil) is a state on the continent of South America, the largest and most populous state on the continent. Brazil is the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world in terms of area and population. The country is also the fifth largest country in the world in terms of area and population (about 192 million).

The country covers a large area between the Andes and the Atlantic Ocean, and borders Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

Brazil has been a Portuguese colony since the landing of Pedro Cabral in 1500. until the proclamation of independence in 1822. [3] Originally independent as the Brazilian Empire, the republic was a bicameral legislature founded in 1824. after the ratification of the first constitution, existed until 1889. [3] The current Constitution defines Brazil as a federal republic. [4] The federation consists of a union of federal territories, 26 states and 5,564 municipalities. [4] [5]

The Brazilian economy is the fifth largest in the world in terms of GDP [6] and the eighth largest in the world in terms of purchasing power parity [7]. The country is considered to have one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
