The Dream Factory Many years ago a firm called Motion Picture Patents Company produced movies in New York and Chicago and dominated the movies market. As independent producers were not able to operate in these markets, they decided to start producing movies in a place called Hollywood, a part of the city of Los Angeles, in the State of California which has very fine weather, plenty of sea and countryside. Hollywood soon became the top leader in the movie market. It produced the first sound film “The Jazz Singer”. Raquel Welch, for example, was in all the newspapers and magazines before she acted at all. She was a popular movie star before she made her first film.
