The Planet Earth
The planet Earth is the third planet from the sun. It is called the "Water Planet," because it is the only planet in our solar system with liquid water on its surface. Water covers about 70% of the surface of the Earth! Continents and islands with different landforms cover the other part of the Earth. Examples of landforms are mountains and plains.
It is the only planet in our solar system where people, other animals, and plants can live. Water is present on Earth in its big oceans, lakes, rivers and in the air!
The Earth’s clouds are made of water vapor. The Earth’s atmosphere has a lot of oxygen in it, but water vapor, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and other gases form the rest of our “air”.
The Earth’s temperature is different in all places, but the temperature is ideal for plants, animals, and people in most places on Earth.
Two important movements affect the Earth. The first is the rotation of the Earth around its axis. It takes the Earth about 24 hours to finish one complete rotation. This movement is responsible for days and nights.
The second important movement is its revolution around the Sun. The Earth orbits the sun in 365 days, or one year.
The Earth has volcanoes. Volcanoes on Earth are different from those on other planets, because they erupt.
The Earth has one moon. It is the closest space object to our planet, the Earth.
