Tarsila do Amaral was born in a small town in São Paulo in 1886
and she died in 1973. She painted self-portrait, national and social
themes and illustrated a book of poems by Oswald de Andrade.
In 1922 she joined the Group of five (Grupo dos cinco), a group of
modernist artists which defended the ideas of the Modern Art
Week (Semana de Arte Moderna). Her most important and famous
canvas is perhaps "Abaporu", a painting inspired by Andrade’s
"Anthropophagite Manifesto,". It means "Man Who Eats" in the
Tupi-Guarani language. Anthropophagy meant transforming the
dominant European culture into a national culture.
