Look at the extract below, from the book Americanah, and answer in your notebook, what is verb tense?
[...] People were flattered to be asked about themselves and if she said nothing after spoke, it made them say more. They were conditioned to fill silences. ​

What time did the action happen? Past, present or future? That would be the tense for the action (verb).

*answer:

Signs of time in this paragraph would be:

"were", "asked", "said", "made". Which indicate actions on the past.

*examples:

Pay attention because those hints will normally be on the verb itself.

Or if there is 2 like "he 'did' 'cry'", the "cry" would not need to be "cried" because "did" already indicates a past tense.
