Urgente!!!

People are always talking about how easy modern life is. Every time somebody who’s a little older sees

something new that has been created to simplify our lives, they come up with the same response: “Yeah,

things weren’t that easy back in my day”. They will say it in a whisper and then suddenly be lost in

memory for a couple of seconds.

For some reason, there is a common belief that life today is easier than it used to be. Obviously, there have been countless advances in technology that indeed allow some extra comfort for people living at this time, but that might be making us miss the big picture.

Take the internet, for example. It’s hard to imagine life without it. For the younger generation, the “digital natives”, life before the internet is something very similar to the dark ages. At least that’s what they imagine. Obviously, the internet is a great thing, and no one is saying it isn’t, but all it offers comes with a price. In exchange for having immediate access to information, people, services, and entertainment from all over the world, we spend most of our time facing a computer screen. That alone is bad enough, but what some people fail to understand is that this digital lifestyle is taking a heavy toll on us. Medical research indicates that more people are suffering from back problems at an early age. Not to mention the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle, which are well known to all.

The bigger problem, however, is that we are slowly forgetting how to do things offline. The other day I was talking to a young friend of mine, and he was angry because the sneakers he bought online were not the model he had ordered, and now he would have to send them back and wait for another couple of days. The worst part is that the place he bought the sneakers from also has physical stores, and when I suggested we go there and exchange them personally, he looked at me like I had just said something completely absurd.

What really makes me lose sleep is that soon it will not be necessary to leave home at all. More and more, people are setting up home offices and companies seem to be growing fond of this arrangement. The really scary part, at least for me, is that the fact that we don’t really need to get out anymore to go places to see people and interact with others is actually seen as a good thing. If this is really what’s in store for us, it will be very easy to define this generation’s lifestyle. It will be sad and lonely.
