The Day of the Dead, “Día de los Muertos” (in Spanish), is a
holiday celebrated in many Central American countries, some regions of the
United States, and especially in Mexico. It is a radition that has existed for
over three thousand years. It has its origins with pre-Columbian peoples, such as
the Aztecs and the Mayans, and was marked by the practice of conserving the
skull of deceased people, so that they were used during rituals that celebrated
death and rebirth.The celebration originally took place in the middle of what
would be the Christian calendar for August. However, with the arrival of
Spanish colonizers in the region, in the 16th century, it was changed to the
beginning of November, according to Catholic traditions
According to the tradition, between the 1st and 2nd of
November, it is believed that the deceased can visit relatives and friends.
That’s why people decorate their houses and cemeteries with flowers, candles,
and incense, prepare the favorite foods of those who have already left and set
up an altar in honor of them. It is also very popular to have parades on the
streets.
