The inventor of the telephone , Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh , Scotland. His father, Alexander Melville Bell (1819-1905) , also an inventor , had created an education system for the deaf. In 1873 , Bell became professor of vocal physiology at Boston University , where he began to experiment with acoustic and developed some concepts to transmit speech electrically. This idea eventually led to the invention of the telephone . The first totally understandable phone conversation took place when Bell , in a room , called his assistant, Thomas Watson , in another , "Come here , Watson , I need you ." Watson heard the call through a receiver connected to the transmitter Bell projected .
