Read the following text, and then answer the questions.

During the last Olympics, an exchange student from Spain was living with my family. Our new Spanish brother’s name was Carlos, and it was tough for him when we watched the Olympic Games because Spain wasn’t able to compete with the U.S. in a lot of the sports we saw.

The U.S. is a much bigger place, and it’s full of sports nuts, so we usually win a lot of medals. In the last Olympic Games, an American runner set a new world record in the 100-meter sprint, and one of our swimmers won a stack of medals. The U.S. basketball team won the gold medal, and our volleyball team won a silver one.

Spain had good teams in basketball and volleyball, but they weren’t able to win any medals in those sports. But Spain’s soccer team beat the U.S., so Carlos had a chance to talk trash to us a bit. Carlos was also glad when a Spanish runner won a bronze medal in track, and another Spanish athlete won a silver medal in cycling. The Spanish basketball and volleyball teams didn’t actually play against the U.S. in the Olympic tournaments, so we were able to root for their team when we saw their games on TV. And Carlos was happy to root for the American athletes when they weren’t competing with Spain.

Of course, it’s nice to win medals, but the Olympics are friendly games, and the most important thing is to be able to watch the world’s best athletes focused on the exciting competition you always see in international sports.

In which sports was Spain able to compete with the U.S. or win medals?

According to the text, when was Carlos happy to root for the American athletes during the last Olympics?

Do you enjoy the Olympic Games? Which sports do you prefer?
