The Queen of Katwe tells the true story of the young Ugandan Phiona Mutensi, a determined girl, but born in a poor region of Uganda, Africa, who did not have great prospects of seeing her life change. Until she discovers chess, which becomes her great passion and mission, leading her to a future she hadn't yet "dared" to imagine.
The film begins by focusing on the reality of Phiona, a girl who lived and worked with her four brothers and with her mother to survive the next day, fatherless and unable to study, she just lived one day after another, selling corn and trying to help as much as possible at home. On an ordinary day, she follows her brother to a Mission, where a man starts training children to play chess. Phiona starts being snubbed by the other kids for her scent, but refuses to leave, which leaves the trainer impressed. Phiona slowly learns the game, but soon begins to predict every move of her teammates and win every match.
The children, over time, begin to ask for more: they want to beat the rich kids in the city. With a lot of effort, the coach takes them to competitions and Phiona's talent unleashes in matches. The film shows the African reality well, but a different one from what people normally associate with Africa. Phiona lives in the poorest part of Uganda, but outside there are cities and people who are very rich, well prepared and fed, unlike the children of Katwe. Poverty is the most common characteristic associated with Africa, but the film shows that within African countries, as in any country, there are not only the poor and only the rich, but both coexist, with inequality visible to the eyes.
The film lends itself to showing the determination of a girl, but it also shows the solidarity of a coach, the strength of a mother, the hope and innocence of children and the inequality between people, but above all it focuses on love for others, something above religious issues, showing how much more should be given than received. The narrative is fluid and quickly captures the viewer, not only because of the story itself, but how it is told, as the actors have a beautiful conversation with each other and with themselves, internalizing the characters and passing these feelings across the screen. At the end of the year, when society most remembers solidarity, a film that carries it from start to finish like the Queen of Katwe is a good choice.
