old english was characterized by several poem-like sentences and words that were i my view fancier than the ones that we got nowadays, the Ancient English was several fold more formal than the ones that we listen and read nowadays, for sure several languages have also been through some of that changes from the ancient formal and poem-like to the informal and full of idioms and abbreviations that we observe, nonetheless English as a antique language dating back as fifth century AD thus we have much more data to those changes in English to the current one, the major aspect that changed over time was the intonation of some words and sentences as well as how some words are written such as amidst to amid we can observe that trend of dwindling the amount of characters to make one word! thus the History of English from ancient Germanic words to modern ones if thoroughly interesting and worth a study!
