Penny Marshal is one of the few female film directors working in Hollywood, turning to directing after almost eight years as a television actress. Her first feature film, Jumping Jack Flash, was a comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg as a computer operator in a bank. Marshal became very well known after her second movie, Big, which stared Tom Hanks as a child who magically acquires the body of an adult. With this hit film, Marshall became the first female to direct a movie earning over $100 million. Her next film –though completely different in tone , subject and treatment –also received critical acclaim. This film, Awakenings, was nominated to three Academy Awards , one of which was for the year’s best picture. Marshal again changed perspective with her next film, A League of Their Own –about females professional baseball players of the 1940s starring Geena Davis, Tom Hanks and Madonna.
Marshall herself decides which projects she will direct. Writers, producers and agents know that when she is between jobs, she will take time to read personally the many scripts sent to her. If she believes a story line has interest and appeal, she’ll fight to direct it., even when her studio is against the idea.

Will Marshal win an Oscar for best director one day? Probably, given the quality of the films she will have mad. But she doesn’t worry if the golden statue eludes her “I’m not going to kill myself,” she says. It clear that her priorities are higher –the directing of movies with a straightforward vision that is both original and engaging.
