Oz: The Great and Powerful
Oscar is a mediocre, greedy and womanizer magician who performs in a traveling circus. His talents of Don Juan put him in a mess and, on the escape, he ends up being driven by a hurricane to the magic land of Oz. There he is mistaken for the great Wizard of Oz and, realizing that he could gain fame, fortune, and beautiful women, he uses deception to take the place of the long-awaited savior.
What Oscar did not know, however, is that in order to achieve all he wanted, he would have to fulfill an uncomplicated mission: to defeat a powerful witch. Fearful, he tries in every way to shirk responsibility and still find a way to get his hands on the money and go back to Kansas.
The story of "Oz, Magical and Powerful" goes before that immortalized in "The Wizard of Oz", but works very well independently. Of course, much of the fun of watching the new movie is to recognize characters who have already faced each other in the other film (Evanora, Theodora and Glinda, the Munchkins) and watch the updates of the scenes, before 100% real, and now with great Doses of computer graphics. The look is very beautiful and remains as colorful and psychedelic as the original. The singing, however, has no time in the new production (which can be a relief for some and a sadness for others).
The structure of the film is very similar to that of the 1939 film, starting with black-and-white images while Oscar is in the real world and moving to colorful scenes when the traveler arrives in Oz. The transport between the worlds, by means of a balloon sucked by the tornado, is also equal. Old acquaintances Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion give way to new traveling companions: Finley the winged monkey and the porcelain doll.
However, the main difference is in the character of the main character: while the kind and innocent Dorothy just wanted to help the new friends and return home not to leave the aunt worried, Oscar is the typical selfish who does not hesitate to pass the others back To make a profit (although sometimes it shows its "heart of butter" side). What is saved in the magical clever is the charisma that James Franco lends to the character, making him funny and extremely human.
Anyway ... the film catches the attention by the incredible visual and the fun and cute characters. It makes a beautiful homage to the original film and creates the perfect opportunity for the younger generations to know that story of friendship and overcoming.
I still have to highlight the beautiful opening with black and white illustrations full of cutouts that give size to the shapes. I did not see it in 3D (because I get dizzy), but I think this is one of the cases where this technology is used to deepen the viewer's immersion into the magical universe of the movie, not just for au
