This article presents an evaluation of the state of the art of the Information Systems knowledge area in Brazil, based on the analysis of 163 articles published between January 1990 and September 1997, in scientific journals of Administration. In order to do so, the topics addressed in the articles, the strategies and the research methodologies used in the empirical research were analyzed, and the quality of these researches was evaluated. It was verified that there is still a strong proportion of published theoretical essays (41% in the period 1990-7 and 34% in the period 1996-7), that there is a predominance of topics on the development and use of Information Systems in Brazil, that research qualitative (the case studies) and survey surveys are the methodologies used in 72% of empirical research; the scientific quality of the articles is still low due to the lack of explanation of how the basic theories are operationalized, the incomplete description of the methodological procedures and the non-validation of the research instruments.
