ENGLISH WORK-SECOND PERIOD - DATE:

Throughout the years there have been horrible stories of
kidnappings that have ended in tragedy. A lucky few, however, were
able to live through the ordeal. Here are two of them.
The kidnapping of John Paul Getty III in June of 1973 was one of
NATIN the most publicized ever, since he was the grandson of Paul Getty, the
richest man in the world at the time. The young Getty was 16 when
four men seized him and drove off with him. But Getty's grandfather refused for many months
to pay the ransom, thinking that it was just a trick that had been set up by his grandson to
get money. Finally, in October, the brutal kidnappers sent one of the boy's ear (and a photo of
his head) to Getty, threatening to do worse if the 2.9 million dollars ransom was not paid.
Getty paid the ransom and the young Getty was released, but the kidnappers were never
found.
In July of 1976, occurred one of the most horrible kidnappings. Three kidnappers
captured a school bus carrying twenty-six children and a driver; they forced the bus into a
large hole that they had dug. The bus and its riders were buried in the hole with just enough
air to allow them to breathe. The kidnappers, James and Richard Schoenfeld and Fred Woods,
demanded 5 million dollars and the sum was paid. All the children and the driver were
rescued after having been buried for 30 hours. The kidnappers were later arrested and sent to
prison for life.
