Os organismos autotróficos, ou autótrofos, podem ser definidos como seres que são capazes de sintetizar seu próprio alimento, ou seja, são capazes de utilizar material inorgânico para sintetizar material orgânico. Entre os organismos que possuem nutrição autotrófica, podemos citar os vegetais, algas, cianobactérias e algumas espécies de bactérias e protistas.
Os organismos heterotróficos, ou heterótrofos, por sua vez, não são capazes de produzir seu próprio alimento, dependendo do consumo de material orgânico previamente formado. Entre os exemplos de organismos heterotróficos, podemos citar os animais, fungos e algumas espécies de bactérias e protistas.

Autotrophic organisms, or autotrophs, can be defined as beings that are capable of synthesizing their own food, that is, they are capable of using inorganic material to synthesize organic material.
