The Proclamation of the Brazilian Republic, also referred to in the History of Brazil as a Republican Coup, [1] was a political-military coup d'état, which occurred on November 15, 1889, which established the presidential republican form of government in Brazil, ending the monarchy parliamentary constitutional structure of the Empire and, consequently, removing the then head of state, Emperor D. Pedro II, who was subsequently ordered to go into exile in Europe. [2]
The proclamation took place at Praça da Aclamação (now Praça da República), in the city of Rio de Janeiro, then capital of the Empire of Brazil, when a group of military personnel from the Brazilian army, led by Marshal Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca, dismissed the emperor and took over power in the country, instituting a provisional republican government, which would become the First Brazilian Republic.
