Being an athlete is not easy when it comes to managing victories and defeats, joys and frustrations. Our technicians keep saying it is normal. They live by giving examples of athletes who overcame themselves after a hard defeat or injury. The return from above is always possible. But is there a formula?

I see a lot of players living more from day to day than from their career. I see it in my midst and it certainly must be so in other sports. Athlete facing defeat or series of defeat as the end of the world. Losing is like being bad. Losing is like wasting time. Losing is the same as not being a good player. When we win, this is usually not the case. We are happy and even doubtful, but few think they are THE GUYS or THE MINES.

I remember a conversation with my former coach when he lost 5 match points in a game against Hicham Arazi, in the Netherlands. Sparrow came up to me and said, "Do you have any idea how well you played? Did you realize how ready you are for higher flights?" You can't think of yourself or shit for a victory or defeat. You have to think about your career. Fight every day, but understand that sport is not made of a result. It is made up of years of learning, victories, defeats, cardboard and incredible games. Whoever thinks only of a game is on the way.

I took this very seriously. My attitudes, my struggles turned to end my career with the best ranking, with a career with titles, with important and big victories.

I see kids and nearby tennis players playing to win a game. Tennis players desperate for the result to put on social media or to improve 10 positions in the ranking next week. But will this give you the joy and pride of being a tennis player, an athlete?

To the youngest, to my dear youth tennis players, transition, beginning of professional or even top, I can only say one thing: play with your heart. Deliver everything for the cause. Be strong and don't get carried away by a hard defeat with a match point in favor. Train to be a better tennis player. Work that every Monday you have one more chance to have the week of your life.

Hope this helps!
