Em língua inglesa, as Relative Clauses (orações relativas) são conectadas pelos pronomes relativos: that, which, when, where, who, whose e whom. Leia, a seguir, trechos do livro Pride and Prejudice, de Jane Austen, prestando especial atenção ao uso dos relative pronouns.

Excerto 1:
We can all begin freely—a slight preference is natural enough; but there are very few of us who have heart enough to be really in love without encouragement.

Excerto 2:
They were in fact very fine ladies; not deficient in good humour when they were pleased, nor in the power of making themselves agreeable when they chose it, but proud and conceited.

Excerto 3:

Excerto 4:

I. No Excerto 1, o pronome relativo who poderia ser substituído por where, sem que o trecho ficasse gramaticalmente incorreto.
II. No Excerto 2, o pronome relativo when faz referência ao substantivo ladies, que é retomado por meio do pronome reflexivo themselves.
III. No Excerto 3, o pronome relativo which faz referência a disgust. Nesse caso, ele poderia ser substituído por that, sem prejuízo à correção gramatical do trecho.
IV. No excerto 4, o pronome relativo whose faz referência a Mrs. Philips. Nesse caso, por fazer referência a uma pessoa, ele poderia ser substituído por who ou that.

As afirmações I, II, III e IV são, respectivamente:
