Science, as a collective institution, aims to produce increasingly accurate natural explanations of how the natural world works, what its elements are, and how the world came to be what it is now. Classically, the main objective of science has been to build knowledge and understanding, regardless of its potential applications - for example, to investigate the chemical reactions that an organic compound undergoes in order to learn about its structure. However, and increasingly, scientific research is carried out with the precise objective of solving a problem or developing a technology, and in the course of this path, new knowledge and explanations are acquired. For example, a chemist may try to synthesize an anti-malaria drug, and in the process discover new bonding methods that can be applied to make other chemicals. In either case (research called "pure" or "applied"), science aims to add to our knowledge of how the natural world works.
