What is volunteerism? The term ‘volunteerism’ is derived from the Latin word voluntaswhich means will, desire, wish, attitude, disposition or freedom. It is an activity which isgoverned by its own members and not by any outside force or external control. Accordingto the Thesaurus free online dictionary, the term is related to the principle of donatingtime and energy for the benefit of other people in the community as a social responsibilityrather than for any financial reward, or the policy or practice of volunteering one’s time orservices, as for charitable or community work. According to The UN, the volunteerism letspeople and communities participate in their own growth. Through volunteering, citizensbuild their resilience, enhance their knowledge base and gain a sense of responsibility fortheir own community. Social cohesion and trust is strengthened through individual andcollective volunteer action, leading to sustainable outcomes for people, by people. De acordo com o texto, ser voluntário:
