The statement is wrong, because the phrase is in the simple negative past by the use of the auxiliary verb did + not = didn't. Thus, the "was" (verb to be in the past), cannot be along with the auxiliary verb did. In this case, when you mean a phrase of the verb to be in the negative past, it was + not = wasn't.
